NESsT supports entrepreneurs that provide dignified employment to people most in need in emerging economies. Founded in 1997, our capital and business services to 200 entrepreneurs has led to the creation of 50,000 employment opportunities for underserved individuals. 

NESsT recently launched an impact investing fund providing debt capital to entrepreneurs in South America. The NESsT fund makes long-term loans, ranging from $50,000 to $500,000, to entrepreneurs operating in poor communities and unable to access finance from mainstream financial institutions. 

Position Overview

 We are looking for a Fund Director to lead all aspects of the new NESsT fund. Specifically, the Fund Director will originate, perform due diligence on, and executive SME lending transactions to achieve substantial financial, social and environmental returns. The ideal candidate has strong experience in, and a track record of, investing in South America or Emerging Markets, preferably Peru, Brazil, Chile and Colombia, including but not limited to sourcing deals and managing investees. 

The position will be based in San Francisco, California (where NESsT is headquartered), or Lima, Peru (where NESsT has a program office for the Andean region). It is expected that frequent travel within and outside the Andean region and Brazil will be required. 

One of the first tasks of the Fund Director will be to recruit a small team of Credit Analysts based in the Andean region to build a portfolio of loan investments across the target region. The Fund Director will also work closely with NESsT’s business assistance team on investment sourcing and investee management.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Participate in fundraising efforts and overall fund business development 

  • Source loan investment opportunities in collaboration with NESsT’s business services team 

  • Lead completion of due diligence activities within appropriate time frames and schedule 

  • Preset loan deals to the fund’s Credit Committee 

  • Monitor and design value creation strategies for the portfolio of current loan investment targets 

  • Put in place new lending processes and policies 

  • Help identify and develop new investment strategies 

  • Contribute to the effective communication and awareness building of impact investing strategies among family offices, foundations, multilateral organizations and other key stakeholders 

  • Recruit, manage, mentor and develop junior staff 

Qualifications

The candidate should have a minimum of Senior Vice President or Principal level experience in a lending institution where he/she has transactional responsibilities in South America or Emerging Markets. 

The candidate should bring the following experience to the role: 

  • A least 7 years of principal lending or transactional experience (at some point having been trained at a major bank, investment bank or private equity firm)

  • MBA or equivalent qualification

  • Starting up/managing SMEs or impact investment funds

  • Setting and tracking impact metrics

  • Financial modeling and analysis, due diligence, loan approval process and monitoring

  • Review of financial and legal documentation

  • Full investment-cycle experience and track record, including leading, negotiating, structuring, investing, managing, monitoring, and successful exiting loan investments of a relevant scale

  • Oversight of the deal process and final responsibilities for all deliverables, including investment memoranda and transaction documents.

  • Management of deliverables to the organization’s Credit Committee, and participation therein

  • Acting as the principal negotiator for transactions

  • Responsibility for the actual performance of loan portfolio versus plan

  • Responsibility for the fund’s overall strategy and growth plan with the executive committee

  • Interaction with external capital providers to gain support for investment financing

  • People management: hiring and training of the lending team members
