The Social Enterprise World Forum 2012 takes place between the 16th and 18th of October at the renewed Port Zone of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
October 16th – 18th – The stage is set in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for the fifth annual Social Enterprise World Forum (SEWF2012). The forum is the premiere global event to develop the social enterprise industry, one that applies enterprising solutions and business practices to solve social, economic and environmental problems. Social businesses are driven by a “double bottom line” including traditional market logic, profit generation and financial sustainability, but also generate a positive social impact to address societal challenges such as lack of education, employment, health services, and more. Over a 500 participants are expected to attend, from elite corporations and government agencies, social enterprises, foundations, financial institutions, from more than 30 countries, including prominent Brazilians in the area.
The theme of SEWF2012, “Social Enterprise: Investing for Impact”, aims to attract new sources of investment that generate, besides profit, social benefits for communities in emerging market countries. The forum will seek solutions to develop the capital market (or financial market) to support enterprises created to promote a social purpose in a financially sustainable way. Impact investing also offers a mutually beneficial opportunity for investors to earn a return on their investment, while also increasing the social enterprise´s ability to achieve their social mission.
SEWF2012 is hosted by NESsT, and the innovative agenda will be driven by their thought leadership and industry experience from being an international pioneer in social enterprise for 15 years. The forum combines 50 interactive sessions and 150 diverse speakers to promote multi-sector collaboration through eight themed tracks and industry areas. The week also includes training workshops, an “Investors Day,” as well as field visits to places like Complexo do Alemão, Tijuca Forest and Rocinha. The forum will showcase social enterprises to impact investors through a “pitching place,” marketplace and awards evening gala. SEWF2012 is also made possible by the generous support of the lead sponsor, the Brazilian National Bank of Economic and Social Development (BNDES), as well as the Lemelson Foundation, SEBRAE, PwC and UBS, among numerous other corporate, government and philanthropic institutions.
