An electrical engineer by undergraduate qualification (at the University of Cape Town), AlexandreRodrigues has since moved his focus towards the world of finance and social development.  After pursuing post-graduate honours studies in Financial Analysis and Portfolio Management, Alex joined Standard Bank’s Corporate and Investment Graduate Recruitment Programme in Johannesburg, where he rotated among various departments, most notably, Community Banking.
It was during this time that Alex assisted the bank with the roll-out of it’s community lending project, and in which his interest in social and developmental finance was kindled.  Last year (in 2011), he decided to pursue his MBA at UCT’s Graduate School of Business.  In the course of the year, Alex helped to launch Africa’s (and South Africa’s) first Net Impact Chapter as well as organised it’s first outreach initiative for beneficiary Nazareth House, an aids orphanage in the Western Cape.  Alex was also involved with the Raymond Ackerman Academy and the Bertha Centre for Social Entrepreneurship (both based on campus), where he took up a mentorship role for a group of township entrepreneurs.
In 2012, Alex was awarded a place on the African Markets Internship Programme (AMIP) as a Tony Elumelu Foundation Associate, where he was placed with host company Injaro (based in Accra, Ghana). The internship involved spending 10 weeks working at Injaro, a social impact investment firm focusing on investments in select West African SME’s along the agricultural value chain.  During his time at Injaro, Alexworked with the investment team, looking to fund companies in Ghana’s nascent seed industry, helping smallholder farmers to improve their livelihoods and standards of living whilst also contributing to the country’s food security.
Alex was also awarded a 3 month international MBA exchange to Rio’s Coppead University, beginning in October 2012, where he will be taking courses in Inter-cultural Negotiations, International Entrepreneurship and Management of Innovation, among others.
